A Few Things...

1. I was finally able to plant a little veggie garden at the new house.  We'll hopefully have a late summer crop, fingers crossed.

I also have a little helper.  He likes watering the garden the best (because he can play with the hose).

2. We really like blackberries around here.  I would recommend this blackberry sweet tea recipe and this blackberry frozen yogurt recipe.

3. Jake loves popsicles!  I finally bought some cheap popsicle molds, but now I need some good recipes.  Any suggestions?

A Few Things

One:  I made this cake last night.  It was super yummy and so easy to make!

Two:  Someone is now climbing!

Three:  Really enjoyed this article on "A new generation of women who are redefining the Southern Belle".

Our Evening

I've mentioned before that the Hubs and I do a special dinner-in for Valentine's Day instead of going out, and this year was no different.  We did switch up the location, normally dinner is served at the kitchen table, but this year we had a cozy meal by the fire on the floor.  It was a special evening spent with the most special person in my life!

Menu: Cheese Fondue with roasted broccoli & asparagus, rosemary bread, marinated steak and chicken, and cherry tomatoes (I went a little overboard). Dessert was S'mores with homemade beer marshmallows.  It was all a great success ;-).

And what most of my reader's want to hear about...

Jake also had a nice Valentine's dinner.  It was a first, spaghetti {and cottage cheese - not a first}!  He wasn't a big fan, a think the noodles and neckedness jammed him up a little bit.

Sweet Paul

I know it's not Christmas or even New Years anymore, but I just discovered this delicious online magazine, Sweet Paul. The recipes look amazing and the styling and photography are just plain beautiful. I'm looking forward to browsing the past 2 issues and the new issue that hits the Internet news stands February 20th! Check it out here and the blog here.

Yum-o!

I think this is one of the most creative things that I've seen...cupcake hamburgers! Bakerella used cupcakes for the buns, brownies for the patty, and cookies for the french fries. I'm not a big baker, but might just have to try them next time the nephew and nieces come over. Find the recipe here and more great photos of these cute little things.

Strawberry Mojito

I told you I would have one of these over the weekend. The only difference once that I used the traditional mint with the strawberries instead of basil. They were very yummy, even the hubby enjoyed a couple. See recipe below...

2 oz. Light Rum
2 oz. Simple Syrup
3 Thinly Sliced Strawberries
5-6 Mint Leaves
Club Soda
Ice

Drop most of the strawberries and mint into the bottom of a glass. Add simple syrup. Muddle strawberries, mint, and simple syrup mixture. Top with rum, ice, and club soda. Garnish with remaining strawberries. Enjoy!

Pig Pickin'...Finally!

We had a wonderful time at our 3rd annual pig pickin', I would say it was a great success! We had a wonderful time with friends and family and lots and lots of puppies. As many of use don't have children yet our dogs are our babies. My mom did mention that the talk about babies at this pig pickin' was very different from the baby talk last pig pickin'...I think we will be surrounded by babies very soon. Anyway, I was finally able to upload some pictures of the event...yay! I also want to thank all of our wonderful friends for their help getting things ready and then helping with dreadful clean-up. We were blessed with great weather, even though it was suppose to rain all day. I've include a little view of what you missed...

Piling items on the kitchen table leading up to the big day. We did custom cups this year, it was custom koozies last year and who knows what it will be next year.

The 4 pans of my Aunt Mary's baked beans. We had 4 people putting these together. I'll include the recipe soon. Normally I'm not a big baked beans fan, but these are really yummy.

The pig master himself, my hubby, and his lovely yummy pig.

My mom brought me this little guy. It was a great old mental pig, perfect for the party. He hung out at the end of the drive way to make sure people made it to the right place.

So of course this year I just had to put 'Come Solute the Swine' on our invites...a week later we had the swine flu outbreak...great. So a friend suggested we provide swine flu shots, they were a hit. The swine flu shot was 2 parts tequila, 1 part midori, and 1 part sour mix.

The spread.

The homemade NC style BBQ sauce...yummy!

The dessert table grew as more people came!
The only actual puppy at the party, miss Lilly...I love how it looks like she has lips. I think we had about 7-8 dogs there at one time. Hope you enjoyed all the pictures and if your weren't there hopefully you can make it next year!

Time for a North Carolina Tradition

Since my husband and I bought our house 2 1/2 years ago we've made it a tradition to have a pig pickin' every spring. It's now time for us to work on our 3rd annul pig pickin'. For those of you who don't know what a pig pickin' is, read here, it's a southern tradition. My husband and I prefer a good eastern NC style BBQ sauce that he makes himself. We both really enjoy having the pig pickin' every year, it's a great time to spend with friends and family. It's such a fun day and you never know what will happen. For instance, at our first pig pickin' things were starting to wind down, the women were inside chatting and the men still outside drinking. All of a sudden I see something fly into the living room and then out. It didn't really hit me at first until a few minutes later I realize what's happening as the BAT, yes a bat, flies back into the living room! So, of course all the women start screaming...just picture some of us grabbing our 'babies' {babies=our dogs} and diving under the dinning room table...it was quite a site! The boys {notice I put boys and not men this time, they had been drinking since 8am} hear use screaming and come charging into the house. One of them leaves the door wide open cutting off the bat's path in and out of the living room. You would think this would be good, except that the bat flies upstairs! Now, picture 5 boys, who have been drinking since 8am, all running up the stairs after the bat...another site to see. They finally managed to knock the bat out with a baseball hat and carry him out.

So, it's always a good time and I can't wait for this year's pig pickin'! I'll be posting little tidbits about the pig pickin' as I begin to get things ready.
